These days, Linkedin is where a recruiter will get their first impression of you. You may not realise how important it is to have a great profile, but we are here to help you make the most of yours.
Put down the glass of wine. It may sound simple and quite obvious but what may look good on your Facebook profile may not always be suitable on Linkedin, including photos of you holding a drink. Find something that is friendly, inviting and professional. Not sure what that looks like? Do a search for similar people in the area in which you are looking and see what their photos are like.
Target Job Description Key Words
Here’s a good tip, take all the text from some job descriptions you are interested in and put all the text into a site like Wordle. It will highlight the words most used in those job descriptions. Pick out some of these words and scatter them though your profile.
Avoid overused words
Are you creative, effective, strategic, driven, innovative? Yeah, so is everyone else on Linkedin. Come up with some more creative words!
Write in the first person
Never, ever, ever write your Linkedin profile in any other way than the first person. This is YOUR page, write from you. ‘I’ not ‘He/She’ or ‘Robert.’
Even if you do not have one, include a current job title
Almost all recruiters narrow down their searches for current job titles, so make sure you have one. If you do not currently have a job, include the job titles you are training for or looking for, with the words ‘seeking new opportunities’ or ‘in transition’ etc.
Share a status update
Like Facebook, you can write status updates on Linkedin, but make sure they are relevant, like an article you wrote, an achievement, a professional/related article you enjoyed. Your entire network will see this update in their newsfeed and weekly update emails.
